The busiest week of close isn't the one with the most transactions. It's the one with the most interruptions.

A staff accountant hits a transaction they're not sure about and pings the partner. The partner stops what they're doing, pulls up the client file, reconstructs context, answers, and tries to get back to where they were. Do that eight times a day during close and the partner has done no deep work at all, just triage.

The transaction itself usually takes thirty seconds to categorize correctly. The interruption costs the ten minutes on either side of it.
